Why are my eyes sensitive to light?

You feel like your eyes are sensitive and you’re trying to understand why? Discover the reasons that may explain your fragile eyes!

Photophobia?

Do you struggle to keep your eyes open in the sun, does your phone brightness become too harsh in the evening, and do you tend to drive with sunglasses during the day? You are most likely experiencing photophobia.

And no, it’s not another strange phobia, but rather the name of a light-related condition! It simply means that you are sensitive to all sources of light, whether natural or artificial.

Where does it come from? The truth is that every case is unique. Photophobia can be linked to an eye disorder, psychological factors, or even neurological causes.

Dry eye syndrome?

Do you constantly feel like you have tired eyes, that you’re straining your vision, or that you struggle to open your eyelids in the morning? You may be experiencing dry eye syndrome.

I agree, the name can sound a little worrying, but don’t panic, I promise there are solutions! Anyone can be affected by dry eyes.

This syndrome occurs when the quality and quantity of tear fluid, more commonly known as “tears”, is insufficient. As a result, tears no longer properly moisturize and protect your eye. Your eyes become more vulnerable to external factors and irritations from your environment, such as light, cold weather, or screens.

Solutions to soothe your light-sensitive eyes

Now that you understand a little better why your eyes are sensitive to light, let’s look at how you can make your daily life more comfortable with different tips.

Wear sunglasses

Outdoors, I strongly recommend that you don’t forget your sunglasses. Your eyes are already fragile, and UV rays can seriously damage them.

You should therefore be extra careful outside, as you are exposed to different reflective surfaces such as water, snow, or sand reflections. To reduce these glare effects, I would recommend choosing polarized lenses, which offer many benefits when you have light-sensitive eyes.

Eye yoga

As mentioned above, do you think you may have dry eye syndrome? How about naturally fighting eye fatigue and dryness with eye yoga? Don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you to bend yourself in half! This is simply about strengthening and relaxing your eye muscles!

• Warm compresses: This tip involves warming your eyelids with a warm water-soaked compress. The goal is to stimulate your tears and help release the tear fluid trapped in the Meibomian glands. You can complete this tip with a massage around the outer corner of your eye.

• Repeated blinking: Usually, you blink without even realizing it. Here, you’ll need to consciously blink more often to help your eyes return to a normal blinking pattern. I recommend doing sessions where you keep your eyes closed for a few seconds, then open them for a few seconds, and repeat.

Wearing makeup with sensitive eyes

With more fragile eyes, I imagine wearing makeup is not always easy! To avoid swollen or watery eyes, I recommend using fragrance-free, preservative-free products that have been tested under dermatological control. You can easily find products to create a comfortable makeup routine without discomfort. You’ll therefore need to pay attention not only to the products you use but also to the gestures you adopt. That’s why I recommend using gentle tapping motions and soft movements around your eyes and eyelids.
