Top 6 Habits That Make Our Eyes Tired!
Top 6 habits that make our eyes tired!
We all have a multitude of bad habits that damage and tire our eyes! Yes, but which ones? And above all, how can we avoid them? ... Come on, let’s get started: we’re revealing 6 bad habits and giving you all our advice!
Rubbing your eyes, spending too much time in front of screens, or even going outside without sunglasses are bad habits that we all have to some extent! Some of them can contribute to eye strain or even represent a danger for your eyes. So here are a few habits you should avoid to take care of your beautiful eyes.
1. Lack of sleep really tires your eyes
Yes, lack of sleep can tire our eyes! But actually, that’s kind of good news: it gives you a great excuse to enjoy a nice lie-in. Pretty cool, right?
In fact, when you don’t get enough sleep, your eyes can become tired, dry and uncomfortable the following day. After spending several hours “using” your eyes, you need to let them recover! When you wake up, your eyes are hydrated and ready to take on a new day.
For a good night’s sleep and to give your eyes even more energy, we also recommend turning off screens one to two hours before going to bed. This helps reduce eye strain and promotes falling asleep.
2. A poor diet affects your eye health
Vitamins A, C, E, Zinc and Omega should definitely not be overlooked when it comes to eye health!
For example, we recommend red fruits, citrus fruits, or kiwi for vitamin C! As for fish, it will be one of your best allies because it is rich in Omega 3. This helps maintain the membranes of the body’s nerve cells, especially those of the retina.
Don’t worry! Your diet is not limited to fruits and fish to take care of your eyes. There are many more foods that are good for your eyesight!
3. Spending too much time on screens causes eye strain
Nowadays, it is difficult to live without screens, whether at work, school, or at home… They are everywhere! However, spending too much time staring at screens is not the best thing for our eyes and can even lead to vision problems.
Blue light from screens can affect your eyes, and screens also reduce our average reading distance. In short, nothing good comes from it! Here are some valuable tips to limit the risks:
- Keep a good distance from your screens
- Adjust your chair so that your eyes are aligned with your screens
- Add a blue light filter to your screens (or wear blue light blocking glasses)
- Take “screen breaks” using the 20-20-20 rule, which recommends looking away from your screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, at a distance of 20 feet (6 metres, to make it clearer!)
- Enjoy natural outdoor light (especially when spending the day indoors on screens)
- Remember to blink! We blink 20 times per minute, but only 3 times in front of a screen.
4. Rubbing your eyes is the worst reflex to have
Even though it gives you relief and is probably one of your first instincts when something bothers you: don’t rub your eyes! (yes, we know it’s a little complicated)
Our hands come into contact with many bacteria! Rubbing your eyes transfers bacteria into the eye and can cause infections! Also, if you rub your eye when you have a foreign object in it, you should stop, as you could push it further in and damage your cornea.
To avoid this bad habit for your eyes, we recommend rinsing your eyes with saline solution.
5. Not wearing your prescription glasses and/or sunglasses
It is important to wear your prescription glasses, however you should not overdo it, especially if you are short-sighted. On the other hand, someone who wears progressive lenses excessively could make their problem worse.
In the same way, sunglasses are essential! Whether you spend a lot of time outdoors or not, it only takes a little exposure to damage your eyes. Be careful, UV rays can cause certain risks!
6. Skipping regular eye examinations
To make sure our beautiful eyes are in perfect health… Let’s go to the eye doctor for a vision check-up! These appointments are important to monitor changes in your eyesight and check whether an eye disease is developing. Ideally, older people should have an eye examination every 2 years!
Whether you have a vision problem or not, all these tips are worth following to protect our eye health and avoid tiring our eyes! And yes, we won’t stay young forever, but with good habits, we can prevent many problems as we get older!
So, when are you going to start saying goodbye to all these bad habits for your eyes?
