Top 7 tips to protect your glasses?
A pair of glasses is such a beautiful accessory, but also an accessory that can be quite fragile and needs to be protected. Between scratches, frame deformation and dirt, glasses can sometimes have a tough life in the hands of some people.
Do you remember taking the time to choose them and how happy you were with them? It would be a shame because they provide you with visual comfort and add style to your outfits.
Discover now the bad habits to avoid and, most importantly, what you should do instead.
Protect your glasses by avoiding scratches
1- Clean your glasses with a microfiber cloth
Avoid scratches, okay, but how? First of all, you need to stop wiping your glasses with your clothes, tissues or paper towels! They often contain small fibres that can cause micro-scratches. Plus, they don’t really clean your lenses; they just spread the dirt around.
The solution?
Use the microfiber cloth provided by your optician when you bought your glasses. Your lenses will be much cleaner, and it’s more pleasant, isn’t it? The best of the best is even to use a glasses cleaning solution to clean your lenses even more effectively.
A little extra tip: taking care of your glasses also means cleaning your nose pads, you know those small “pads” that keep your glasses in place on your nose. Why clean them? Because they can turn yellow over time due to makeup or sweat.
2- Store your frame in a glasses case
Yes, don’t be surprised if your glasses get scratched when you throw them loose into your handbag. There are lots of small dust particles, loose coins, etc. that will inevitably come into contact with the lenses and cause scratches.
The solution?
A glasses case! We know it can take up space in your handbag, and it can be annoying to carry around all the time, but your eyes will thank you. Scratched lenses can affect your vision, especially if the scratch is in the wrong place. It’s even worse for sunglasses, as scratches can seriously affect mirror-coated lenses.
3- Don’t scratch micro-scratches with your fingernail
Yes, it has happened to all of us! We think it’s dirt, we scratch it with our fingernail and then realise it was actually a micro-scratch that we have just made worse.
The solution?
Of course! When you are unsure, instead of risking damaging your lenses, simply take your microfiber cloth and gently wipe them. If it is a micro-scratch, it’s annoying, but at least you won’t have made it worse.
Prevent your frame from becoming deformed
Did you know? Your glasses can become deformed because of your bad habits and therefore become weaker over time. It is important to protect your glasses! Poor little things!
1- Use a glasses case
Let’s agree, we all know someone who has broken their glasses by accidentally sitting on them. It’s an accident among many others, but it perfectly illustrates what I’m trying to explain.
The solution?
Yes, this is already advice we gave you to protect your lenses, but it also applies to your frame. A glasses case will help keep your frame safe (away from your backside). Plus, there are plenty of different types of cases, both rigid and soft!
2- Don’t place your glasses just anywhere
When you want to take your glasses off, what do you do? You put them on your head! Well, you should know that this can deform your frame, especially the temples.
You should also avoid hanging your glasses from your collar. It’s better than putting them on your head, but they can fall more easily and get damaged.
The solution?
Either put them in your amazing glasses case (yes, we keep coming back to the same advice) that you just bought thanks to my great tips! Otherwise, simply place them somewhere stable and safe, such as a piece of furniture or the table at the café where you’re enjoying your coffee.
3- Don’t leave your glasses in extreme heat
You should know that heat can have a negative effect on your glasses, both the lenses and the frame.
High temperatures can damage the coating applied to your sunglasses lenses and therefore reduce their ability to protect your eyes. Heat can also deform your frame and cause a misalignment of your prescription lenses. This uncomfortable shift can lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness, or even double vision.
The solution:
Do not leave your glasses on your car dashboard in direct sunlight or on your beach towel. You should also be careful with sudden temperature changes, such as moving from a hot environment to a cold room.
4- Remove your glasses carefully
Yes, glasses are a very fragile accessory, and the smallest action can affect their lifespan. If I told you that the way you remove them from your face could deform them? Indeed, constantly removing them with one hand can unbalance and deform the temple.
The solution:
The only solution is to remember to remove them using both hands at the same time, parallel to your face.
