Binocle3D is proud to announce the official release of DisparityKiller, a powerful and automatic post-production tool for correction of stereoscopic shots.

DisparityKiller is a post-production software designed to correct automatically all geometrical disparities inherent to a 3D shooting, resulting from camera slewing, camera translation, camera lens magnification and convergence.

These disparities, if not removed, can lead to intense tiredness and eye-strain, and be very painful for the final viewer as well as for all post-production operators.
It is thus essential to remove these deformations from the stereoscopic pairs, and that is where the DisparityKiller steps in.

Relying on a strong expertise, Binocle developed this post-production software, essential to accomplish a key step in the process of creating a stereoscopic sequence.

Le DisparityKiller est un logiciel de post-production conçu pour corriger automatiquement toutes les disparités géométriques inhérentes à une prise de vue en relief, découlant de la rotation ou de la translation des caméras, du grandissement des optiques ainsi que de la convergence ("effet trapèze").

Ces disparités, si elles ne sont pas supprimées, peuvent conduire à une fatigue visuelle et cérébrale intenses, et être très douloureuses pour le spectateur final, mais aussi pour tous les opérateurs de la chaïne de post-production 3D. Il est donc essentiel de supprimer ces déformations des paires stéréoscopiques, est c'est là qu'intervient le DisparityKiller.

S'appuyant sur une forte expertise, Binocle à développé ce logiciel de post-production, permettant d'assurer une étape indispensable dans le processus de création d'une séquence stéréoscopique.

1.General presentation

DisparityKiller is a post-production software designed for the correction of stereoscopic images, which allows to correct automatically all geometrical disparities inherent to a 3D shooting.

Applying corrections to rushes allows to watch the movie in its early stages in stereoscopic edition without cerebral tiredness or eye-strain. Thus, it prevents from disinclinations due to tiredness and clarifies eye-strain causes resulting from sequences choice or edit point.
DisparityKiller turns out to be essential to validate all post-production operations until the final version, to deliver a movie free from disparities to the viewers.

The correction function of DisparityKiller v1.0 corrects the following issues:

camera slewing
camera translation
lens magnification
keystone effect due to converging cameras.

It is essential to eliminate these problems from the stereoscopic pairs to ensure the visual comfort of the viewer.

The correction function of DisparityKiller v1.0 is calculated on one or several images of a shot and applied throughout the shot.

Please note that you will have to ensure the synchronisation of your sequence to obtain a good correction.
Besides, DisparityKiller is not designed to handle variable geometrical disparities in a shot (due to a change of convergence or focus during the sequence for exemple).

3.1.File formats

DisparityKiller can correct and produce images in the following formats : bmp, dpx, fit, gif, jpg, pbm, pcx, pgm, png, ppm, psd, tga, tiff, xcf.bz2.
It can also take images in input in dcm and xcf.gz formats.

3.2.Required configuration

Windows :

1,8 GHz processor or faster
512 Mb of memory (1 Go recommended)
200 Mb of available disk space for installation
1 USB port for the dongle or network access for a floating license access
optionally :
- Gigabyte network for distant access
- high-speed internet access, for online services access

Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later

On MacOs, with a 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4Gb of memory :

Tests on dpx images, resolution 1920x1080 (about 8Mo/image) :
- Correction computation with 2 "computeFrames" : 4s
- Correction computation with 5 "computeFrames" : 9s
- Correction computation with 15 "computeFrames" : 27s
- Rendering : 36 pairs corrected per minute.

On windows, with a 2.8Ghz Intel® processor and 3Gb of memory :

Tests on dpx images, resolution 1920x1080 (about 8Mo/image) :
- Correction computation with 2 "computeFrames" : 7s
- Correction computation with 5 "computeFrames" : 20s
- Correction computation with 15 "computeFrames" : 50s

1.Présentation générale

Le DisparityKiller est un logiciel de post-production destiné à la correction d'images stéréoscopiques, qui permet de corriger automatiquement toutes les anomalies géométriques inhérentes à une prise de vue relief.

Les corrections appliquées aux rushes offrent la possibilité de visionner le film dès les premières versions du montage stéréoscopique sans fatigue cérébrale.
Le DisparityKiller s'avère indispensable pour la validation de toutes les opérations de post-production jusqu'à la copie finale, afin de livrer un film sans disparités visuelles aux spectateurs.

La correction du DisparityKiller v1.0 corrige les problèmes :

de rotation des caméras
de translation des caméras
de grandissement des optiques des caméras
« d'effet Trapèze » dus à l'utilisation de la convergence lors de la prise de vues.

Binocle Disparity Killer : Images non corrigées (à gauche) et corrigées (à droite)

Éliminer ces anomalies des paires stéréoscopiques est indispensable afin d'assurer le confort visuel du spectateur.

Le DisparityKiller v1.0 analyse une ou plusieurs images choisies d'une séquence et applique la correction calculée à toutes les images de la séquence.

Attention : vous devrez vous assurer de la bonne synchronisation de vos séquences pour obtenir un bon résultat.
Par ailleurs, le DisparityKiller ne garantit pas un résultat optimal dans le cas de disparités variables (dues à un changement d'entre-axe ou de focale pendant la séquence par exemple).

To install DisparityKiller on your computer, simply follow the manual provided on the license dongle, which details the steps to follow to install the software on a mac or windows.

Important notice : you may save all your work prior to install DisparityKiller, since a reboot will be needed to perform the installation.

Do I have to pay for future updates ?

DisparityKiller's updates can be enhancements, corrections or new features.
When purchasing or renting the DisparityKiller, we grant you with a free access to all updates for one year (up to the chosen period end in the case of a rent).

Then, if you purchased the DisparityKiller and this period is over, if you wish to benefit from new updates, you will be able to purchase a new one-year period support, for a preferential rate.

How can I correct my images with the DisparityKiller ?

The use of the DisparityKiller is detailed in the user manual, which you can find on the license dongle.

How can I specify the name I want for the output results ?

To specify the name wanted for the output images, use the Output Dialogue, which you can access by clicking on the "Edit" button in the "Output" section.

In this dialogue, you can find help on output names format with the question mark button.

The input name will be interpreted as follows : %S.%F.%E,
where %S is the shot name, %F is the frame number (0 if not present) and %E is the file extension.

Here are some examples :

if my input image is my_image.input.0430.dpx:

How to choose the ComputeFrames ?

The ComputeFrames are the frames on which the correction will be computed for the whole shot.
It is thus best to select frames with different depth distributions, and well textured.
For example, good results will be obtained with two pairs of images where close, middle and far objects can be seen, on the left, right, top and bottom parts of the images, whereas fifteen pairs of images with almost no variation of depth, or not enough textured elements will lead to a less good correction, which may deform the shot's images.
