Motion control + digital imaging = stereoscopic 3D revolution

All the versions of this article:

How to master all the parameters of stereo production and obtain a pleasant stereoscopic 3D effect without cerebral stress and thus contribute to the emergence of a new form of cinema? Ever since Binocle was founded, its philosophy, research and development have focused on these issues.

Binocle has always understood that motion control and digital imaging play an essential role in real-time 3D parameter simplification and adjustment.

    MOTION CONTROL + DIGITAL IMAGING
    =
    STEREOSCOPIC 3D REVOLUTION

    Technological revolution

Stereoscopic production can be mastered by motion control, a technique which allows camera motion to be controlled accurately using computers.

The capture of motion control data and stereoscopic corrections simplifies all post-production processes.

However, stereo shooting-related residual artifacts and disparities bring about cerebral stress, which impairs the comfort and pleasure of viewers over the duration of a feature-length film or TV program.

Furthermore, regardless of the accuracy of motion control technology, mechanical, optical and electronic devices can not yield zero-defect results. Thus, digital image correction performed in post-production for the cinema industry and in real time for the 3D HD TV industry is an essential part of 3D stereoscopy.

    Artistic revolution

This technological revolution is accompanied by another type of revolution: an artistic revolution.

        - The 3D image is totally different from the 2D image, unlike High Definition which is simply an improvement of the quality of the 2D image.

        - Cinema directors and operators now have new narrative and production tools for state-of-the-art cinematography.

        - The public is unanimous in demanding images and films of enhanced visual quality.

Binocle is part of this technological and artistic revolution, providing the tools to make technical mastering and 3D production available to most directors and technicians, and a pleasant experience for viewers.

    Milestones:
    A world first !

Ever since its creation by cinematographers in 1998, Binocle’s mission has been to provide innovative solutions for stereoscopic film shooting and post-production.

A year after its creation, Binocle formed a partnership with Thomson Broadcast Systems and Angénieux to develop the first fully motion-controlled digital stereo camera allowing real-time stereoscopic disparity visualization.
